Sunset Fishing
I stopped by the beach late one evening after a long day. It was extremely frigid and a little windy, but the skies were clear, and any light coming through wasn’t hindered by any clouds. I carried my 6D with me, as I normally do, but wasn’t prepared to photograph anything in particular. I sat on a log quietly as the sun began to set. Its warmth fought the chilly air, and I noticed two harbor seals bobbing their heads as they watched the people beginning to clear out. That’s when I saw the fisherman from the corner of my eye.
He was dressed in layers, with high rubber boots, gloves, and a heavy jacket. He had a fishing pole in one hand and a bucket strapped around his waist. He kept looking far out over the water, and what he was looking at, I’m not completely sure; only that it seemed to guide him further and further down the shore. I then realized that the seals had their eyes on him, too. Finally, after walking down about 50 feet, the fisherman stopped and stepped knee-deep into the water. After a moment of adjusting his stance to withstand the waves coming in, he cast his line out. I watched him do this several times until it finally occurred to me that I should probably capture it on my camera. So, I pulled it up, took a couple of shots, then waited until he threw his line out again. Once he did, I knew I had gotten something special.
